History of Cancun

cancun40 years ago, Cancun was a desert island and it was very little known. Located in the most isolated region of the Caribbean, it is formed by one dune with the shape of number seven, in some areas it is 20 m wide, separated from the firm land by two straight canals that are connected to the sea through a wide system of lagoons.

The riviera comprised swampy marshes, surrounded by mangroves, virgin rain forests and unexplored beaches. In some maps the name of this place appeared as “Kankun”, that in Mayan language means “Pot of snakes” or “Snakes’ nest”.
